A report on
some of the activities of the affiliates
Sri Lanka Federation
has just entered into agreements with the Colombo local authorities to
construct toilets and houses in the city. They have also made agreements
with the Kurunegala Municipality. NSDF in India has entered into agreements
with State Governments to roll out their successful toilet construction
programme that has been pioneered in Mumbai and Pune. Philippines Federation
has started savings schemes in East Timor and will soon travel to Indonesia
to assist emerging savings schemes in that
country.
Malawi Federation
has been offered land by the Blantyre municipality where it will start
a pilot housing project. This is part of an agreement with the city whereby
they will conduct the city-wide surveys as part of the Blantyre Cities
Alliance Programme. At the end of November they go to Tanzania to support
the savings schemes in Dar es Salaam. Muungano in Kenya will begin to
enumerate shacks, in partnership with the Govt. in Kibera slum as part
of the railway upgrading programme. Linked to this enumeration is a housing
project on a piece of land in Kibera that has been provided by the Department
of Lands. Uganda Savings Groups have begun with the construction of a
sanitation unit in Kisenyi 3 and have begun to prepare for a housing development
on two prime sites in the same informal settlement.
Zimbabwe Federation
has been seeking to find a resolution to the crisis at Porta Farm where
evictions are pending. The Namibia Federation is planning a Youth Festival
in Windhoek in December. The SA, Kenya and Zimbabwe Federations are expected
to participate. The SAHPF in South Africa continues to spend most of its
energy on political in-fighting but some regions have chosen to set these
issues aside and proceed with development work. The Durban Federation
recently participated in the Cities Alliance meeting and extended its
partnership with the Durban Metro to include inner-city medium density
housing development. In Cape
Town the Western Cape Federation continues to seek to work with the city
authorities on a major upgrading and relocation programme.
