UPDATE:
DURBAN METRO & HOMELESS PEOPLES FEDERATION PARTNERSHIP
PROJECTS
Amaoti
After the enumeration and the verification exercise that were
done last year November 2004 and March 2005 respectively,
the HPF in Amaoti started 9 savings schemes in the 15 different
communities. The savings schemes have grown from small groups
of a minimum of 20 members to 35 members within a short space
of time and with continuos support and encouragement through
excahnge programmes within Amaoti and from other savings schemes
outside Amaoti.
After
several exchange visits within the year these groups have
gathered information and have proposed that they construct
house models as a way of depicting to the Amaoti community
as a whole process of savings does not only end with gathering
people and money, but goes beyond even to tap largely on devlopment
as the major end product. 15 site have been chosen in Amaoti
by the Homeless peoples Federation and a professional surveyor
is yet to be appointed by the City to survey the sites' suitability
for construction of the houses.
Not only is housing the main issue amongst the Federation,
they have also identified a site for an ablution block (Sanitation
Unit) in Amoti and an Engineer from the City Water Services
has been given the task to view the site and assess its suitability
in terms of water and sewer reticulation.
Lamontville
2 Sanitation Units in Lamontville have been completed and
the HPF have been handed the keys to take over with the daily
running and maintenence of the sanitaion units in their own
capacity. It has been their project from the inception phase
up until the implementation stage and as such it has been
handed over to the as theirs.
Piesang
River Double storey pilot project
The pilot project has taken a very slow pace due to some technical
issues that the Municipality together with the HPF have to
deal with before the actual construction phase. The bill of
quantities and the desings have been handed over for apprioval
by the rightful sections of the Municipality.
Kind regards
