A REQUEST TO STOP DEMOLITIONS

Your excellency you are aware of the large scale demolitions of poor communities in your country. Sir, you more than anyone understands that they do not have much to go back to in the rural areas. No body leaves your homeland for fun. The poor come to cities to fill their stomach. There are more options in the city for them to ensure that they can earn some money to
get at least two decent meals. These options are not there in the rural areas. These people have had so many dreams of what you as their leader will do for them. Sir, the damage caused is completely reversible and you have the power to do it if you wish to. We hope you will not let down thousands of poor families for whom you are their only hope. We are ready to give you
whatever support you may want to help begin sove this problem. In Mumbai by the end of this year the National Slum Dwellers Federation will have housed 50,000 families. Sir this can only happen when poor communities can work hand in hand with government. Poor communities cannot do this on their own and and nor can government.
All our experiences from different countries have proven that we cannot wish away our poor and it is only wise for us to find solutions that work for the State and these communities. We trust and hope that with all the best of intentions that you have for your most vulnerable citizens you will
find a solution that works for them and the state.A solution that ensures that they get two meals a day and a roof over their heads. Sir you are aware that these are the very families who service our cities and contribute to the informal economy.
We trust you only can make this shift and find a solution if you wish for it.
