MUUNGANO WA WANAVIJIJI / KENYA SLUM DWELLERS
FEDERATION
MESSAGE OF SOLIDARITY
We
the members of Muungano wa Wanavijiji / Kenya slum dwellers federation have taken note
of the situation of the evictions on the people of Zimbabwe. These inhuman acts have
affected the poor in the following ways:
- Social displacement of the people
- Left hundreds of thousands homeless
- Human and democratic right to
shelter violated
- Properties and belongings damaged
and lost
- Federation office demolished
- Children burned in the houses
in one of the settlements
As
Zimbabwe homeless
peoples federation is part of our family, we share with them during
this difficult time and request.
Immediately
cease the mass evictions taking place around the country;
- To ensure that adequate alternative
housing is immediately provided for already displaced population
and initiate dialogue with
affected communities in accordance with human right principle,
especially CESCR general comment no. 7;
- Investigate and prosecute the
use of excessive force by the police during the current eviction
drive;
- Comply with the state ‘s obligation
under international law to respect everyone’s right to adequate
housing, including legal security of tenure and freedom from dispossession;
information; participation and
self- expression; and resettlement ;as well as the right to food,
water, health, education and the right to earn a livelihood.
NB/ The Kenyan slum dwellers federation position is that “Evictions
without alternative solution are a violation of human right”
Thanks you in advance for your attention to this matter of
agency, we look forward to hearing from about your remedial response.
Respectfully,
Benson Osumba
